3 WHAT IS THE SUBJECT OF THE FILM?

Christmas comes for everyone, even for those who must work, even for those who are not characterised by quick thinking but are rather guided by pure heart and innocent eyes, able to see the magic among the mist of a dismal reality like the one that shrouds the three protagonists of this novena held in a factory. Gabriele, Michele and Raffaele are three night watchmen who work in a factory out of commission and dream of a warm place where they should wait for midnight; meanwhile they make do with what they have, longing for the company of a nativity scene. Suddenly, someone knocks at the door. A transvestite, Angela, is looking for a shelter and an overnight accommodation. They let him in, because where there is place for three at the dinner table, there is place for four. Someone knocks at the door once again: she is Maria, a pregnant girl in labour accompanied by her young husband, called Giuseppe, as bewildered as her. They take care of her with the help of a veterinarian who lets her get on his van together with an ox and a donkey, and finally three workers arrive and carry some food for Christmas: they are elegantly dressed as the Three Kings, including a dark-skinned man, while outside the light beam coming from an overhead crane illuminates the sky through the windows at the top of the factory. At the end, the three watchmen stare astonished at Angela who rises to the sky …

The setting in an iron and steel centre out of commission which symbolizes the deep employment crisis embodied by the three protagonists, who however react with positivity and hope. Their attitude also comforts both the young chilled angel and the couple of new parents, who are confused and helpless like Giuseppe and Maria in a cave two thousand years ago. Meanwhile, the fate of many other people – too frantic to enjoy Christmas – is stuck in the nearby traffic jam.
